My father was born and raised in Minnesota and has been following the Twins since the mid 60's. When I was an impressionable young 6 year old kid in 1991, I thought my dad was it. I loved everything he loved, Minnesota sports, and especially the Minnesota Twins, included. I still remember that night over 14 years ago. Game 6, 1991 World Series. Even though I was only 6 years old, I knew enough to know how big Kirby was that night. For all of my friends that think I'm too obsessed with sports, with the Twins, with Kevin Garnett, with Johan Santana... I can trace it all back to the catch. To the home run. Kirby Puckett made me a sports fan. I can never thank him enough for the joy he brought to me for years and years, and still brought to this day everytime I looked through my 50+ Puck baseball card collection, held my Kirby Puckett wooden bat, put on my Kirby Puckett glove, or wore my Minnesota Twins hat. Thank you Kirby, you will be missed.

Yours Truly on ESPN

Okay, no, I was not providing analysis for NBA Fastbreak... although I'm sure I could do a better job than 75% of their broadcast team... but I did get one of my email responses to a recent Tim Legler article posted on ESPN.com's Daily Dime feature.

Click on the image for the full size.

"Legs" wrote that he would have left Kevin Garnett (21.7 points, 12 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 2.55 steals and blocks, and 53% FG's) off of the all-star team in favor of Carmelo Anthony (26 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.8 steals and blocks, 46% FG's), Chris Paul (15.9 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 7.7 apg, 2.25 steals and blocks, 43% FG's), and Marcus Camby (14.8 ppg, 12 rpg, 1.5 apg, 4.5 steals and blocks, 48% FG's, in 33 games). Now, are these three players all star caliber this season? Yes. Are they more all star caliber than Kevin Garnett? Hell. Freaking. No.

Here's some advice Mr. Legler. Don't get caught up in hype, hot streaks, or short term trends. Kevin Garnett's brilliance is easy to overlook because he's been doing it for 10 years. I have a feeling you went a little too much on instinct. "Wow, Camby has been playing really well this year... he should be an all star!" Or, "Chris Paul is doing a great job leading the young Hornets, and he's only a rookie!" Or even, "Holy shit, 'Melo is actually making more smart decisions than dumb ones for a change... let's make HIM an all star!" I'm sure that's what was going through your head when you made those ridiculous claims, and obviously you just forgot the "Wow, Kevin Garnett is still one of the top 3 or 4 most dominant and all around players in the league," statement. I forgive you, because I know you will never carry enough clought to actually turn your idiotic fantasies into realities, thus deeming you relatively harmless.

Here is a transcript of my email respone, with a link to the Daily Dime it was printed in.

Yes, Tim Legler, you were wrong. There is no way that Kevin Garnett should have been left off of the All-Star team. It should not matter how his team is doing because he is doing everything in his power to get them wins. Who's more valuable and more of an All-Star, the player that gets you 55-60 wins instead of 45-50 (a la the Spurs with and without Duncan) or a player that gets you 40-45 wins instead of 10-15 (a la the Wolves with and without Garnett)?
-- Ryan (Santa Barbara)

Garnett a Controversial All-Star? If You're an Idiot.

I love (hate) all these experts that are saying Kevin Garnett did not deserve an all star spot. You'd think that the guys they let write for nationally published web sites would have some common sense, but instead, they really don't see the whole picture.

I've been trying to decipher why exactly Greg Anthony and Tim Legler, to name a couple, have said KG is undeserving this year. The best I can come up with... they are punishing for past greatness. That's the only thing that makes sense. It is clear that they are not basing it on this year alone, because The Big Ticket has still been producing better all around numbers than any forward in the West. An argument can be made for Elton Brand, and I suppose one for Shawn Marion, but I still think KG comes out on top. His assists have always been what sets him apart from the others, and even though his are down this year, they are still better than those of his fellow elite Western Conference forwards. His points are right around 22, despite taking fewer than 16 shots per game. Why, you ask? Because he is putting up an astounding 54% field goal percentage... as a guy who takes flak for shooting too many perimeter jumpers.

So it must be his past that is hurting him. He has been so dominant in recent years, that his play this year pales in comparison. Well let me ask you Greg Anthony... is Kevin Garnett competing for an all star spot against the likes of Shawn Marion and Carmelo Anthony, or is he competing against the Kevin Garnett of 2003-2004? 2004-2005?

He should not be penalized just because his numbers are slightly down. They are still better than nearly everyone elses.

'Wolves Making Moves

As you've probably heard, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics have just completed a seven player trade. The primary players involved in this trade are Minnesota forward, Wally Szczerbiak and Boston guard-forward, Ricky Davis. The Celtics will also be receiving center Michael Olowokandi, rookie center Dwayne Jones, and a future first round draft pick. The Timberwolves will also be receiving center Mark Blount, point guard Marcus Banks, forward Justin Reed, and two second round draft pick.

The 'Wolves also traded Nikoloz Tskitishvili to the Phoenix Suns for a second round pick.

After years of speculation, the 'Wolves have finally moved the chic styles (and sharp shooting) of Wally Szczerbiak.

Analysis

Well, initially I was very confused by this trade. Wally Szczerbiak is mor of a Timberwolf than anyone on earth not named Kevin Garnett. He's been there since 1999, and like him or hate him, we've all come to know him as a 'Wolf. Now he is no longer. After thinking it over, I've decided that this is a good trade for the Wolves. The way I see it, Davis is slightly better than Wally and Blount is slightly better than Olowokandi. We certainly just lost some shooting and rebounding, but in Davis, the Wolves have acquired the all-around, slasher type player that they need. He opened this season on fire, but has cooled off dramatically... basically the opposite of Wally World. Hopefully the chance to play with Kevin Garnett will get Davis alive, juiced, and ready to put up those 20-6-6 numbers that we were seeing in November.

The 'Wolves acquired an athletic, but historically volatile player, in Ricky Davis.

Blount and Olowokandi... eh, they're both overpaid, undertalented centers that are a waste of space. The Wolves lost the opprotunity to dump Kandi's contract after this year and picked up a bloated one in Blount, but they saved money in the Wally-Davis exchange. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wolves trade Blount at seasons end if he does anything at all resembling his '03-'04 season in the second half of this year.

I'm not too sure why the Wolves got Marcus Banks. They already have three point guards with clearly defined roles. If anything else, it could be because Banks' $2 million contract expires after this season.

I don't know anything about Justin Reed other than he is a 6'8", 240 pounder who only averages 1 rebound every 13 minutes. Great.... our rebounding just got worse.

The draft picks are interesting. It seems like Kevin McHale has become so accustomed to not having first round picks, that he has decided to just trade them away from now on. Or maybe he is dumping them because if he doesn't have a first round pick, there's no way he can get blamed for making a bad first round pick. I have a feeling that was his thought process behind it. So yeah, the Wolves have now lost a first rounder to the Clippers (Cassell trade) and to the Celtics. We do have plenty of second rounders, however, which McHale can use on guys like Rick Rickert and Blake Stepp. I'm psyched.

In the end, I'm happy about this if for no other reason than SOMETHING NEEDED TO BE DONE. I don't know if the Wolves improved upon their talent, but they took the plunge and made a move. At least we know they're trying... somewhat. Who knows, maybe the high-energy play of Ricky Davis will rejuvinate Kevin Garnett. Maybe the chance to play with a dominant power forward will allow Mark Blount to blossom into a crappy player instead of an extremely crappy player. Maybe Marcus Banks will actually become a point guard and the Wolves can trade Troy Hudson for LeBron James.... just maybe.

Note: Timberwolves host Boston on Monday. It'll be weird, but interesting to see Wally in the Target Center in an opposing uniform.

All-Star Special

Various sites around the web have began publishing their picks for the 2006 NBA All Star game, so I figure I'll follow suit. But something needs to be done to allow this. With Yao and Marcus Camby both hurt, there is no deserving starting center on the Western Conference ballot. With current voting, it appears the the Western Conference front line will be Tracy McGrady, Tim Duncan, and Mehmet Okur. Repeat... Mehmet Okur. Now, does Okur deserve to be an all star? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say yes. But does he deserve to be a starter? Hell freakin' no. Are you telling me the NBA can't step in move Tim Duncan to center and allow KG, Brand, or Dirk the other starting forward spot?

The other positions are pretty clear. Nash is the best point guard in the game. Even though I hate Kobe, I won't deny his talent or the fact that he will be starting in this game whether I like it or not. Brand and Garnett have been the two best forwards in basketball, with Duncan, The Matrix, and Dirk close behind.

West Reserves

Dirk Nowitski
Shawn Marion
Tony Parker
Carmelo Anthony
Ray Allen
Brad Miller
Baron Davis

Close, bu no cigar

Jason Richardson
Pau Gasol
Tracy McGrady
Rashard Lewis
Chris Paul
Mehmet Okur

Eastern Conference Starters

G - Allen Iverson
G - Dwyane Wade
F - LeBron James
F - Chris Bosh
C - Ben Walace

I wanted to put Paul Pierce at the 2nd forward spot in front of Chris Bosh simply because a front line of Brand, KG, and Duncan would abuse James, Pierce, and Wallace. Pierce and Bosh were close, so I went with Bosh simply for the size. I don't think there are really any other arguments about who should be starting for the East.

East Reserves

Chauncey Billups
Rip Hamilton
Paul Pierce
Vince Carter
Gilbert Arenas
Shaquille O'neal
Jermaine O'neal

Yeah, so I put three Pistons on the team. They deserve it. I had half the mind to put Rasheed on there too, he is, after all, the best fantasy center in the NBA so far this year. Nevertheless, three was the most I wanted from any one team.

Close, but no cigar

Rasheed Wallace
Jason Kidd
Brevin Knight
Michael Redd
Chris Webber
Antawn Jamison
Dwight Howard

Garnett On Fire

If Kevin Garnett seemed sluggish on defense and rebounding early in the season, he seems to have livened up as of late. In his past 3 games (all Timberwolves wins) The Big Ticket has averaged 27.67 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists, and is shooting a jaw-dropping 70% from the field. He's also had a double-double in 11 straight games. The KG we all know and love is returning.

Also, he only needs 3 rebounds to reach 9,000. That would give him over 16,000 points, 9,000 boards, and he is approaching 4,000 assists. Those are all around numbers that have been reached by few players in history.

Not Gone Yet

Yeah, I've pretty much sucked as far as keeping this up. This must happen. He solves just about every glaring problem the Timberwolves have. He's also about the only star that is rumored to be available through trades. I don't know what we would be giving up, but if the initals are something other than KG, then we have nothing to lose. How 'bout something like Kandi, Wally, and picks... or Kandi, Hudson, picks... or Kandi, Hudson, Wally for Pierce and Blount. Something... anything.

Today I reviewed some of the Timberwolves team stats. They are 2nd in FG% and 2nd in FG% defense. They're also 1st in turnovers forced and 5th in scoring defense. You'd think those are the stats of a great team..... BUT. They are near the bottom in rebounding (about all aspects of it) and free throw attempts. Paul Pierce leads his team in rebounding as a small forward. Paul Pierce gets to the free throw line. Paul Pierce can create his own shot and is reliable, unlike our current 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th,.....nth scoring options. I wish I could put a camera in McHales office and tap his phone line... because if he doesn't make a SERIOUS effort to try and get Pierce or someone good, he needs to be fired. I'm sure that they'll say "we were in contact with several teams and nothing could get worked out" if nothing in fact works out, but frankly I am skeptical and cynical enough to not believe a word that man says.

I want Paul Pierce in a 'Wolves uniform before February. I need Paul Pierce in a Wolves uniform before February. Kevin Garnett REALLY needs Paul Pierce in a Timberwolves uniform as soon as possible. I hope the Celtics take a serious dive starting now so that they still look to shop him around. In the end, however, I think KG and his fans are destined for more heartache and heartbreak. Somehow KG hit the jackpot in the genepool/head lottery, but can't get a break when it comes to situations.

P.S. Kobe is complete and utter trash. 33 shots and only 25 points with NO ASSISTS. You have to try to be that bad.

Garnett Trade Rumors Gone Wild

If you woke up today, chances are you saw something about Kevin Garnett being traded to someone by sometime. Well... I would really not be worried. Kevin Garnett is not going to get traded unless a team offers some SERIOUS talent in return, and the rumors I've heard so far do not meet such criteria. The Timberwolves beat the Wizards behind Kevin Garnett's 25 points, 14 rebounds (he had one that was credited to Hudson), and 9 assists. It's about time. He did, however, have to play the entire second half for the T-Wolves to be able to hang on, which is not good. They will have to start learning to play without him, because he cannot continue to play 41 minutes a game. D Case said before the season that he would limit the Big Ticket to somewhere around 35 or 36 minutes a game... something that is obviously easier said than done when your win-loss record is on the line. Overall, however, the Wolves played well against the Wiz. Gilbert Arenas was in a little zone for much of the game, but the Wolves were able to limit the rest of the team, aside from giving up a few easy dunks to Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas. Kevin Garnett was guarding Antawn Jamison most of the game, and held him to 12 points and 4 rebounds. Good signs...

Todays game is against the Bobcats, who just played last night in Indiana. This should mean an easy win for us, however, if you haven't noticed by now, nothing comes easy to the Minnesota Timberwolves. I expect Rashad McCants to get more minutes tonight, as there is no real offensive threat on the Bobcats that will require extended service from Trenton Hassell. I hope this team can jump out to a big halftime lead and atually maintain it through the 3rd quarter. I know they don't have another game for 4 days after this one, but I'd still like to see KG get some rest. In the end though, I think the Wolves will let the other team stay close... again. I think the Wolves will win, but 'Cats will cover.

Charlotte Bobcats (+10) over MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES... (MN) 95-87.

Home team in caps

Prediction: 11/17 - Washington Wizards at Minnesota Timberwolves (-4)
Last game: incorrect
Season (4-3)

I'm keeping this short.

4 rebounds. 5 fouls. Can anyone remember Kevin Garnett EVER having more fouls than rebounds? There is absolutely NO excuse for the most athletic 7 footer an the floor to get only 4 rebounds. If he falls anywhere short of 25 points and 15 rebounds tonight, he will be in a semi-dog house state. And make sure to tune into TNT right at 7 pm ET, there is a rather disturbing Kevin Garnett interview.

I'm taking the Wizards to win and obviously cover. The Wolves are not clicking on offense. Wally can't hit the ocean from a pier, Marko isn't scoring, Kandi is still passive/clueless, KG is not taking shots.... the defense can play as well as they want tonight, but against Washingtons offense and surprising defense, the Wolves will need to click on both ends of the floor to get a win. I don't see that happening.

Washington Wizards (+4) over MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES, 96-88.

Prediction: 11/15 - Houston Rockets at Minnesota Timberwolves (-2)
Last game: incorrect
Season (4-2)

Well the Nuggets game was definitely a step backward in the defensive improvement that this team seemed to be making last week. I did not watch the whole game, so I don't want to be a critic, but from the highlights I noticed Wally lost view of his man twice for backdoor alley-oops. Wally could have played perfect defense the rest of the night for all I know (yes, I know that is highly unlikely), but against the Denver Nuggets... how do you lose track of a guy in the baseline??? They run little backdoor baseline alley-oops ALL the time. A defender should never let his man get in between him and the baseline when playing the Nuggets because that is what they are looking for in their half court offense.

Rebounding was obviously terrible as well. I still can't decide if KG is injured, trying too hard to get his team involved, or just playing very passively. I'm now leaning towards the latter... there's no reason for him to have three sub-10 rebound games already. None. He needs to get in the paint on offense and defense and let the other team know that when the ball is up in the air, he WILL be coming down with it. Marcus Camby embarrased him. Like I said, I didn't watch the game so I don't know if KG was guarding Camby, but it shouldn't matter. Once the ball hits the rim and goes up in the air, the two-time defending NBA rebounding champ better be going for it, because Olowokandi is not going to get it done alone.

Rashad McCants was definitely a bright spot from last game. I've seen the replay of his (huge) dunk on Camby, which lead to his 2nd technical foul and an early exit, and I have no doubt in my mind that if it had been any other player, not only would a technical foul not have been called, but Camby would probably have been whistled for a personal foul and put the dunker on the line. Rashad has been getting some SERIOUS rookie treatment thus far. He hasn't given in, however, and continues to attack the basket. The Wolves haven't had a player like that since... a little help? JR Rider? Ever? I think/hope McCants' playing time continues to increase, because there is no denying that this guy can fill it up. Once his jump shot starts falling... look out.

Another note, Wally Worls finally shot the ball well. Hopefully the four 3's that he burried will help his confidence because he is going to be an integral part of this offense.

And now for tonight......

I expect Yao to have quite a game, probably somewhere in the 25 points - 15 rebounds area, if not better. I think TMac will be contained, but not stopped... let's say 24 points with good rebound/assist/steal numbers. One commonality which the Timberwolves is the tendency for a role player to really hurt us. This was more relevant in past years, but against Denver this was seen in Demarr Johnson. I think it may happen again tonight, with one of Jon Barry, Ryan Bowen, David Wesley, or Juwan Howard having an above average night.

I think Kevin Garnett will have another good, not great... impressive, not dominatng... eye catching, not eye opening game. I'll ballpark it at 23 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists. I'm hoping Wally will step up with another 20 point performance and am hoping Marko can get worked back into the offense. It's a scary though, but I have a feeling that this game will be decided by the Wolves bench, specifically Troy Hudson and Anthony Carter. When they are both on, this offense still functions sans KG. But when they are off, it is downright frightful. Because it's at home, and because they're coming off their worst loss of this young season, I think the Wolves will play with much more focus and determination than last game.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES (-2) over Houston Rockets... 87-81

Prediction: 11/13 - Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets (-6)
Last game: correct
Season (4-1)

The Nuggets and Wolves do not like each other. The rivalry has fizzled somewhat, mainly because the two main combatants (Spree and Jon Barry) are no longer on either of these teams. There is, however, still bad blood. The Nuggets are favored by 6 points and are coming of a bad loss to Sacramento. The Wolves have had 3 full days off after their impressive victory over the Lakers. My gut tells me to go with the Nuggets, but the Wolves have battled in both their road games so far this year, are well rested, and have a decent history against Denver in the past couple years. If Trenton Hassell can do his standard shutting down of Carmelo and Jaric/AC/Hudson can slow down Miller as well as they slowed down Smush, I can see this team winning. I expect Kenyon Martin to get off to a fast start, as he seems to do against KG often, but the Wolves should wear them down late in the game. Eddie should get a lot of minutes again, as he is much more apt for guarding Marcus Camby than the Kandi man is.

I'll take the Wolves and the points...

Minnesota Timberwolves - 92, DENVER NUGGETS - 89

(home team in caps)

Cheers to Our Star

I recently read that Kevin Garnett just donated $1.2 million dollars to the Katrina Relief fund. Oprah pays all the overhead and wages for the people who supply the labor to turn KG's dollars into help. With the money, a house a month for the next two yeas is going to be built. Kevin Garnett makes the live of countless people better by simply taking the court everynight... but what he did for upwards of 100 people in the south is truly admirable. The defense was also outstanding... let's hope they can keep it up against LA's other team.

As far as the Laker game is concerned... It's Lakers +6. I think the Wolves will win, but expect the Lakers to cover. I know it's already halftime while posting this... but before the game, I was expecting the Wolves would be favorites, but also expecting the game to closer than the line. So yeah... I'll say final score............ Live and In Person

I will admit, although I hate Los Angeles as a city, I love that any time the Wolves visit either of their two teams I get to watch them on TV. In the case of the Clippers, I can even attend some of their games (do you know the price of Laker tickets???). Well Saturday, November 5th was one of these ocassions. I made the 2 hour drive down the gane with my buddy from home, Steve, who is also one of those enlightened individuals who understands the brilliance of Kevin Garnett's game.

When we arrived we immediately headed to our seats... Section 102, Row 8. Appoximately 25 feet behind the visitors bench. As soon as we got there, we noticed Mad Dog was walking to the first row to sign some autographs. We ran down there and we said "Oh, it's great to see some Timberwolves fans out here!" I then showed him that I was wearin 4 KG jerseys, and he said "Wow! You really came prepared, man!" We shook hands, he autographed my hat, then went to do some shooting around. After that I got autographs and had very brief conversations with Trenton Hassell, Anthony Carter, and Richie Frahm. They were all nice guys. When Wally came out, however, about 6 of us began calling his name, his response? A glare in our direction. And how'd you play in that game, Wally? Karma at it's finest.

Seeing these guys was cool, but there's a reason people pay a lot of money to sit that close to the Timberwolves. That reason's name is Kevin Garnett. When the team ran out for it's organized warmups, you could tell everyone's eyes on that half of the gym just lit up. We all know Kevin Garnett is beautiful to watch, but seeing him warmup (without 3 guys trying to force him out of the lane and rough him up at any chance) was pure pleasure. That man can stroke it. Holy shit. I think he missed 4 shots in about 12 minutes of shooting. He came over and shot baseline jumpers right in front of us... good... good... good... good... good... like a machine. He then went over to the other side... good... good... good... good. It was unbelievable. Much like the game I went to last year, there were a number of KG jerseys in the audience. When the players were introduced, KG got a larger cheer than any Clipper (and Olowokandi was showered with boos). KG and Cassell had a playful exchange at center court, then it was gametime.

I'll spare an in-depth game recap, as I'm sure many of you watched it. Basically, Kevin Garnett played very well. I can't imagine how exhausted he must've been, but he was able to will the team into overtime for the second straight day. Unfortunately, the result was also similar... a loss. I thought Trenton Hassell played very good defense, which I was unsure off before. Hudson was obviously huge, but I don't think that this will become the norm with him. Wally was atrocious. He couldn't hit a shot or grab a rebound. That little bank shot he missed was bad, but not getting back on defense and letting Quetin Ross all but ice the was inexcusable. I hope his effort increases. Also, Rashad McCants is getting the rookie treatment big time. He has been hacked going to the basket at least 6 times this year, but has yet to shoot a free throw. I'd like to see him get more time, especially when KG isn't out there, because McCants is the only Timberwolf that doesn't own an MVP award, but can create his own shot with ease.

Here are some of pictures from the game.

Timberwolves at Sonics Recap

I'm going to keep this short, as I'd rather provide in depth analysis of the Clippers game (which I attended).

There are really two things that stood out to me in the Sonics game.

1) The Wolves are not very good when Kevin Garnett is on the floor. The 4-5 minutes during the beginning of the 4th quarter, while KG was on the bench, was some of the ugliest offensive execution I've seen... if it can even be called offensive execution. The Twolves shot 0-6 from the floor... all three pointers. Terrible. KG came back in and made a baseline fadeaway 16 seconds later. I think anytime KG is on the bench, Anthony Carter NEEDS to be running the point. He seems the be the only guy besides KG who has any clue about how to set up someone else for an easy shot.

2) Something is not right with KG. Only 7 rebounds for the 2nd straight game... and this early in the season. He was grabbing closer to 17 a game to start the last two seasons. Back in the day, when there was a rebound up high above a crowd of players, KG would sky up and pick it off before anyone else had a chance. The last to games, he's just been in that crowd as a spectator, hardly even jumping for the ball. He is also a step slow on D... letting his man drive by him somewhat regularly. I really hoope it's his ankle and is still healing. Because if his knees are already giving him problems... that is a bad, bad, bad sign.

Prediction: 11/4 - Minnesota Timberwolves at Seattle Supersonics (even odds)
Last game: incorrect
Season (0-1)

I didn't post my prediction for game 1, but I can gurantee I thought the Wolves would cover the spread of 11 points, so I'll say my current season record is 0-1.

Tonight's game has even odds. I'm picking Seattle, just because I think they are more comfortable with their team right now than the Wolves are. They also lost their home opener and likely would not enjoy losing their 2nd home game in a row to start the season. The Wolves will take some time to get to know each other on the court, as previously stated, and I think the next 6 games could be a little rocky.

SEATTLE SUPERSONICS 98, Minnesota Timberwolves 90

(home team in caps)

Wolves Win Game #1

First off, I want to say congratulations to Dwayne Casey for getting his first win as an NBA head coach. It feels good to have the regular season here and to be 1-0. I think, however, this could be a rough first couple of weeks for the Wolves. Despite all the new faces, this team seemed like their old selves... falling behind early in the game, working hard to catch up and build a lead, and then losing the lead and creating a nerve-racking contest. The fact that this was against the supposedly horrendous Portland Trailblazers makes me a little worried. The next 6 games might not be the prettiest to watch for Wolves fans, but they are important tests to see how well and how fast this team can gel. In 2003-2004, the Wolves started 9-8 because of multiple new additions. They went 49-16 over their last 65 games, however, and reached the Western Conference finals. I have no doubt that this team can't do the same. Let's just hope they gel sooner than 17 games in.

I may be feeling a little pessimistic right now, as that seems to be the general atmosphere surrounding Minnesota sports right now. Honestly, if Daunte Culpepper would have been injured in the same manner during their seventh game last year, I would have been depressed for a week. But with all the controversey and poor play going on with that team right now, I hardly batted an eye. Daunte Culpepper's career could be ruined... and it didn't even phase me. After disappointments from the Twins and now the Vikings, I really couldn't handle a letdown by the Wolves. But really, if we need Richie Frahm to come to the rescue in a home game against the Trailblazers? What's it going to be like when we play ANYONE on the road or some of the better teams at home? In the end, however, I am still optimistic about this season and believe the Wolves will win around 50 games and enter the playoffs as anywhere from the 5th to 8th seed.

Efficient Night For Kevin Garnett

Kevin Garnett came out in the opener and put up the type of numbers that can really only be described in one word... efficient. He finished with 18 points (9-13 FG), 7 boards, 7 assists, and 2 blocks. Dominationg by no means, nor are they bad. But they aren't KG. Only 7 rebounds? I was expecting that many in the first quarter. I honestly think his ankle, knee, or both is/are bothering him. He really only drove to the basket twice and his interior defense was not played with the usual ferocity that he has become known for. I'm really hoping it's his ankle, because that his heal. If it's his knee, however, it means it's a problem that's been lingering since last year now, and that is a bad sign. Let's hope KG can fix what ails me and put up a more typical 25-15-6 line tonight against Seattle.

By the way, even if KG's legs are limiting his explosiveness, they will never damper his heart near the end of the game. That long jumper and then baby sky hook were two huge shots and the Wolves likely would have lost if he had not made them. Kevin Garnett is clutch... and clutch is everything.

Rookie Saying all the Right Things

After his first NBA regular season game, Rashad McCants was full of praise for his team leader and new big brother.

"(Garnett)'s the best player on the planet by far, hands down. There's never been a doubt in my mind about that. Just being with him for the past two months, (it's) incredible. He gives me tremendous confidence out there. Even when I was down and out, missed those last three layups, he was just pounding on my chest, 'Come on, let's go. You're going to miss those, but you've got to get one more.' That's all I need, is a guy out there that's going to push me... It pushes me to a new level. I've got a guy out there who's the best player on the planet pushing me. You can't ask for much more."

Well said, Rashad. As far as his game went, I definitely saw some good things. Rashad attacked the basket on numerous occasions. While he may have missed many layups, those are shots that will start falling soon. He also got very little respect from the refs, as I thought he deserved to go to the line on at least two of his drives. Also a positive, his individual and team defense did not look to bad. He could be seeing a lot of minutes soon.

The Best Kevin Garnett Site on the Planet

A final note, I'd like to say a big thanks to the operator of Kevin Garnett Tribute. He put in a plug for my blog on his site without me even asking. I really appreciate it, and make sure to check him out. He's running by far the most extensive Kevin Garnett website on the net.

http://www.geocities.com/garnetttribute/

Ten Reasons While the Wolves will be Back in the Playoffs

As I stated in my previous article, I believe the Timberwolves will return to the playoffs as the 6th seed after a 50-32 season. Following are 10 reasons why I am confident they can do this... starting with #10 and in increasing order of importance and contribution to the rise on the Wolves.

10. Michael Olowokandi

I think the Kandi Man will finally be sweet... or at least not so bitter. It's his contract year, he keeps saying he's the healthiest he's been in a while, and Dwayne Casey has given him a fresh start. I don't care if Olowokandi doesn't have a breakout year, I just don't want him to have another breakdown year. In his contract year with the Clippers, he put up 12 points and 9 boards. I'm hoping for 12 points and 8 boards, with a block or two thrown in there. If he keeps his head on his shoulders and his mind on the target, I think he can do this.

9. Rashad McCants

We haven't had a drafted rookie come in with this kind of offensive talent and potential since Wally came here six years ago. Everyone knows he can score, and he can do it in a variety of ways. His defensive struggles, however, have also been well advertised. But I look at it like this... last year Spree was nowhere near a 'good' defender and he was a lost cause on offense most of the time. McCants is AT LEAST as good offensively as Spree was, and probably similar in defense. McCants, however, is coming off the bench and is young with sure improvment on the way. I like this guy and think he will help this team this year... and even more so in the future.

If McCants can breathe some life (and strong drives) into the Wolves jumpshooting backcourt, he'll prove to be very valuable.

8. Eddie Griffin

Eddie's potential has yet to be tapped, but this preseason he showed many glimpses of what he can do. He had 6 blocks in one game and 5 in another and can still stroke the three. If he develops any post game to go along with his interior defense, rebounding, and outside shooting.. we'll be looking at a close copy of Kevin Garnett. And let me ask you, what better option is there to back up the actual Kevin Garnett?

7. New Offense

Dwayne Casey's motion offense should open up new doors to what this team can do. Wally Szczerbiak was more or less wasted for most of last year because of a slow-poke, shoot-first point guard and the fact that Sprewell was starting. With the increased tempo that Casey is employing, I think it'll open up many more open looks for Wally and many more of those good ole' transition throwdowns for KG. Anthony Carter is looking brilliant running this offense, as he forces turnovers and then pushes the ball while throwing crisp passes. This team should at least be more exciting to watch.

6. D-Case

Dwayne Casey.... if KG calls him D-Case, then I sure as hell am going to call him the same. Although I don't think Flip was to blame for last seasons problems, I do think a fresh voice is going to help this team... and I like what Casey's been saying. He seems like a straight forward, no bullshit kind of guy. He's not going to play Troy Hudson just because he used to start, if AC outplays him then AC will play in front of him. He's not going to waste any of KG's health and energy if it's unecessary. And obviously, he's not going to humor Ndudi Ebi and act like he's ready to contribute. I think Casey could very well win the coach of the year award.

Dwayne Casey's fresh voice and new system should have the Wolves heading in the right direction.

5. Wally Szczerbiak

As I said before, I think the new offensive system is going to really help Wally. Last year, KG probably lost 1-2 assists a game because of the bricks that Spree, Hudson, and, surprisingly, Cassell were throwing up. This year, many of his passes should lead to open shots for Wally World, who will likely knock down 50% of them. I'm expecting 18 points , 50-40-85 for his FG-3PT-FT percentages, and improved defense for Wally this year.

4. Point Guards

Sam Cassell is gone. I don't care how many clutch shots he made in the 4th quarter of close games. Because from my count, he never made one while sitting on the bench with hamstring or back problems. He also gave up a layup or drive-dish-dunk for every shot he made. Marko Jaric carries less baggage, plays more defense, and hopefully will stay healthier than ET did last year. The backup point guard is still a wild card. I truly believe the Wolves would've benefited greatly (this season and in the future) if they would've dealt Hudson and kept Lucas III. Hudson kills the offense when his shot isn't on because he thinks he should shoot anyways, and kills the defense constantly. I really hope Anthony Carter is first off of the bench for Jaric, because he is insanely better at running the offense than Hudson is, and Casey has hinted at agreeing.

3. Defense

D-Case has been teaching and preaching defense since that costly trip to Las Vegas. He wants the point guards to stop penetration and if they fail he wants defensive rotation to help. Sounds simple, but the Wolves couldn't do that if their lives depended on it last year. Jaric, AC, and Hassell is a very good defensive backcourt and word is that Wally is playing very good team defense. Hudson and McCants are liabilities, but Casey has said they are learning. If KG's knee stays healthy, I expect him to become the possessed demonic defender of old. Eddie Griffin is a blocking machine and if Kandi can keep his legs healthy and moving, he'll prove to be a decent interior defender. All in all, I think this team could become very good defensively and could win a lot of games because of it.

Eddie Griffin's improvement should lead to plenty more blocks and boards.

2. Focus

This team has one goal... erase the thought of last year. The contract distractions of Sam and Spree are gone, there won't be any coaching changes in the middle of the year, and last year left a very unfamiliar and unliked taste in the mouths of Kevin Garnett and Wally Szczerbiak. Although this team has many new faces, the new guys know what this team went through last year and they know that the Wolves higher powers have no intentions of repeating it. Kevin Garnett is calling himself the 'sensei'. He will be angry... he will be focused... and he will have the Wolves back in the postseason.

KG said he's going to have more fun this year, but not at the expense of focus and determination.

1. Kevin Garnett

As it has been for the last 10 years... if the Wolves win, it's because Kevin Garnett is good. Very good. An offseason strength program and slightly decreased minutes should keep the Big Ticket healthier this season. And when he's healthy, you don't want to be the opposing teams power forward... or small forward... or center... or point guard... or shooting guard... or coach... or, well, you get the idea. Last season surely put KG's career in perspective in his eyes, he knows he's going to need help and he's going to need to make his teammates better. He's always made it easier on guys around him, but I get the sense he'll do more than that. I think he is mentally preparing them to overachieve. He's not going to accept anything less than every single players best. Kevin Garnett means business this year... I mean REALLY means business. He doesn't want he embarrassment that brought him to tears on national television. This team has potential, and it all starts with the monster year that Kevin Garnett is about to have.

2005-2006 NBA Regular Season Predictions

Eastern Conference

Atlantic

New Jersey 47-35 (3)
Philadelphia 41-41 (8)
New York 38-44
Boston 36-46
Toronto 26-56

Central
<img style="FLOAT: right; This is a draft with firends and friends of friends who always play competitively and are diligent with roster updating. I had the 8th pick (out of 12) in the draft. The league uses the categories Points, Rebounds, Assists, Steals, Blocks, FG%, FT%, Turnovers, and 3 Pointers. The draft results are as follows:

Round 1:

K. Garnett, L. James, S. Marion, D. Nowitski, A. Kirilenko, A. Iverson, D. Wade, T. McGrady (8 overall), K. Bryant, T. Duncan, A. Stoudamire, R. Allen

I was not surprised by the first 4 picks. AK47 going 5th seemed a little early for an injury proned player, I also think he only dominates one category, and shouldn't go higher than 10th or 11th. The guy that took Amare missed the draft (it was after the injury) and has further sketchy picks to come. I took Tracy McGrady with the 8th pick. I don't ever want Kobe Bryant on my team, and believe Duncan's numbers will be declining soon... so T-Mac was the most logical choice.

Round 2:

Z. Ilgauskus, S. Nash, B. Davis, V. Carter, G. Arenas (17), J. Kidd, P. Pierce, R. Artest, Y. Ming, E. Brand, J. O'neal, P. Stojakovic

Yeah, I know... Big Z 13th overall. I was surprised too. I still don't know why he did that. I think JO should have gone before Brand, but that's a close one. Peja's role in Sac-town seems to be declining even further, so that might have been too high. I was very glad to get Arenas with the 17th overall pick. I think his numbers will be even better than last year now that Hughes has moved... and Arenas was already the 6th rated player overall in Yahoo! Leagues last year.

Round 3:

S. Marbury, M. Ginobili, S. O'neal, M. Bibby, B. Miller, J. Richardson, S. Francis, B. Wallace (32), R. Lewis, L. Hughes, R. Jefferson, A. Iguodala

Pretty routine picks... I like the Bibby pick a lot. I think Shaq went too early, but the player probably wanted a center. I don't really like Ben Wallace from a fantasy standpoint, but I like to draft by position in the beginning. I had a point guard and shooting guard and wanted a center... so Wallace it was.

Round 4:

C. Billups, C. Magette, C. Bosh, P. Gausol, D. Howard (41), S. Abdur-Rahim, Josh Smith, J. Johnson, C. Anthony, Z. Randolph, B. Gordon, K. Korver

Hmmm... Magette obviously went too high, but that wa the absent drafter. I love the fantasy trend of people seeming to be under the influence that awesome dunks get more fantasy points. Josh Smith in the 4th round??? His nice dunks aren't going to help make up for that horrible pick. He'll give you great blocks for a small forward, but what else? Ben Gordon also went too high. He's only great with 3's, and decent with points and assists. I was DEFINITELY glad that Dwight Howard was available for my 4th pick... he will take off this year. I now have studs at point guard, shooting guard, power forward, and center.

Round 5:

W. Szczerbiak, E. Okafor, C. Paul, M. Redd, U. Haslem, M. Camby, J. Howard, A. Jamison (56), R. Wallace, J. Crawford, J. Terry, M. Jaric

Picks I like - Josh Howard, Marko Jaric. Picks I don't like - Paul, Haslem, Jamison, Crawford. I would have definitely taken Josh Howard if he fell one more spot. I think the 5th round was too high for Chris Paul... he will surely put up good numbers by rookie standards, but he is not a great starting point guard for a fantasy team. He is also likely to fade later in the season when he hits the rookie wall... that equals death in the fantasy postseason. I don't like Jamison aas my small forward... I think he can be decent, but I've been actively shopping him around.

Round 6:

K. Martin, A. Miller, C. Boozer, T. Parker, L. Odom (65), M. Peterson, T. Chandler, T. Prince, D. Marshall, K. Hinrich, S. Swift, M. Okur

I think Stromile Swift was the best pick of this round, he should be very good in Houston. Andre Miller is also a pretty good point guard for the 6th round. I was unsure who to take here, and went with Odom (more on him later).

Round 7:

D. Stoudamire, J. Nelson, J. Magloire, C. Mobley, S. Cassell, L. Ridnour, Kurt Thomas, J. Przybilla (80), R. Hamilton, S. Jackson, J. Tinsley, S. Dalembert

The Cassell pick will probably prove to be very good if Livingston stays hurt. Kurt Thomas will probably get plenty of boards and decent points. This was my big pick... Godzybilla. I had my eye on him starting in round 5. If you saw his number how the last two months of last season, you'll know why. If he gets the minutes he's supposed to this year, he will be a blocking and rebounding machine.

Round 8:

S. Livingston, M. Daniels, A. Bogut, B. Haywwod, R. Alston (89), B. Simmons, J. Dixon, C. Butler, P. Brown, D. Jones, A. Jefferson, J. Rose

We're getting into the lesser players by now. Livingston will be good if he plays and I think Bogut is a little overrated... and now that the Bucks got Magloire, I can't see a great season for Bogut. I don't like the Damon Jones pick. I think he was a beneficiary of Shaq last year, but the same could apply to LeBron this year, so we'll see. I am marginally happy with my pick of Alston. He will get the majority of the minutes at point feeding McGrady and Yao... so his assists should definitely be there. He will also likely be sitting at the 3 point line a lot, and he always gets good steals and keeps his turnovers down.

Round 9:

R. LaFrentz, G. Hill, J. Williams, E. Jones, J. Childress, T. Murphy, I. Diogu, C. Webber (104), A. Walker, R. Davis, S. Battier, A. Harrington

Diogu is injured and is a rookie, not a good fantasy combination. Grant Hill is going to miss up to 6 weeks and Jason Williams appears to be lost in the shuffle of Miami. When my pick came about, I knew I wanted a power forward. I sorted through which were left, and was surprised nobody had taken Webber. I thought about it for like 10 seconds and realized he was too good to pass up. Even if he plays poorly by his standards again, he will still be producing better than any other 9th rounder. I was pretty happy to see a 21 point - 12 board performance from him on Wednesday. Now C-Webb... stay healthy!!

Round 10:

B. Knight, D. Gooden, Q. Richardson, V. Radmanovic, Deron Williams (113), T. Ratliff, Nene, C. Frye, R. Felton, M. Miller, S. Telfair, E. Dampier

It's interesting that Cassell and Livingston went so close to each other, and now Brevin Knight and Raymond Felton have done the same. This shows that everyone obviously has no idea which of the pg's will get the most minutes for each team. I liked Knight a lot last year, and if he gets similar minutes, will be a steal in round 10. I loved my pick here and was waiting for this one for a long time. I think Deron is about to have a very solid rookie season. Point Guard and Utah Jazz just sound right together.

Round 11:

G. Wallace, K. Brown, L. Deng, Marvin Williams, B. Wells, M. Dunleavy, D. Miles, R. McCants (128), A. Daniels, JR Smith, J. James, M. Sweetney

Kwame could be good... or a bust. But not too much of a gamble in the 11th round. I don't think Marvin Williams will play too much this year. I think JR Smith was the best pick of this round, but he was dropped by that player shortly after. This is when I start to get a little bias. As a Twolves fan, I'm hoping McCants can bring some live back to that team... and he appears to be quite an offensive player. I think he'll challenge for ROY honors.

Round 12:

D. Mason, D. Christie, N. Krstic, A. McDyess, C. Kaman (137), J. Jackson, N. Mohammed, E. Boykins, E. Griffin, J. Stackhouse, TJ Ford, C. Duhon

Now that Mason has gone to the Hornets, I think he was a phenomenal 13th round pick. Eddie Griffin should be worthwhile with his 3's, blocks, and boards and TJ Ford could prove to be very good this year. I needed some more depth at center, and Kaman was the best choice available. If he can stay healthy and put up 8-8-1 with a block or two mixed in, I'll be happy.

Round 13:

B. Sura, D. Harris, J. Foster, D. Fisher, Maurice Williams, M. Finley, J. Posey, M. James (152), K. Cato, J. McInnis, J. Smith, S. Claxton

Nothing huge in the last round. Finley could be a good pick if someone gets hurt and he gets into the starting lineup. If Jeff Foster can play most of the year, he'll be an excellent fantasy center. I took another point guard even though I probably shouldn't have, but Mike James is now on the Raptors and will probably be shooting a lot of 3's and at least getting some assists with Bosh on the scoring end.

Overall I like my team a lot. I got a lot of players that I think will improve this season. Przybilla should be great, C-Webb will be an awesome 9th round pick if he plays in 65+ games, and Deron Williams could be a very surprising rookie.

Since the draft happened some changes have been made. I was offered Manu Ginobili for Lamar Odom, and accepted. His overall numbers were too much to reject that trade, and Kobe is killing Lamar. Also, I am in the process of trying to acquire that which they call the "Big Ticket". His owner was interested in Dwight Howard so I offered him Howard and Alston, and Howard and M. James... both of which were turned down. I then offered Howard and Antawn Jamison and thought he might accept, but it was again turned down. Right now I have a proposal of Ginobili and Ben Wallace for Mr. Garnett. I have a feeling he might decline this as well... but think it has a good chance of going through. I might be giving up too much to get KG, but in my eyes, it's worth it just to have Garnett on my team.

Wolves 2005-2006 season preview coming shortly.

Apologies for the Hiatus

Hello loyal readers, if such people exist... Known for leading by example, Garnett has become more vocal as he begins his 11th season.

"In times past, I would leave that to Ervin Johnson, or I would leave that to Tommy Hammonds," Garnett said of former teammates who spoke up when needed. "Now I'm smack in the middle of that. It's new."

Garnett is doing whatever it takes, even interrupting practice for a moment to make a point, if necessary.

Last week, he showed Nikoloz Tskitishvili the proper technique for setting screens and talked about every detail while his teammates watched and listened intently. Then Garnett spent more time after practice with Tskitishvili.

Increasing his communication skills is a facet of leadership Garnett accepts, if not embraces, because he realizes it is needed. Veterans such as Johnson, Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell are gone.

Rashad McCants, Dwayne Jones and Bracey Wright are rookies. The key newcomer with NBA experience, Marko Jaric, never has been an all-star, unlike Cassell and Sprewell.

Garnett, the NBA's most valuable player in 2003-04, is the leader of this team more than ever. He and Wally Szczerbiak are the only players on the roster who have been all-stars.

"I'm a lot more vocal because we have a lot of guys who are young and don't know what Case (coach Dwane Casey) wants, and aren't all the way comfortable with asking a question," Garnett said. "So I'll ask it out loud or I'll ask Case to go over something again if I feel like everybody's thinking, 'What the hell?' "

Garnett wants to pass along his perspective to ensure his teammates know what is expected in the NBA.

"It's a little more elaborate (role), but I'm put in a position where I have to do it, or who else is going to do it?" Garnett asked.

The younger players, especially, have taken notice.

"I've played with Tracy McGrady, Grant Hill," forward Ryan Humphrey said. "I've never seen one person who's as vocal."

"He's a sensei," training-camp invitee John Lucas said. "That's what we call him. He tells you when you're going hard and gets on you when you're not going hard. He wants to bring the best out of you, and you can't ask anything else from a leader."

Garnett's passion for the game is fiery. His patience wears thin at anything less than perfection.

"You can't look at how Kevin says something, you have to look at the substance of what he says, and guys have done that," Casey said. "He has been a great leader. He has been vocal. He has done everything from an organizational standpoint that you want a player to do — working with young guys, helping young guys, and helping me as a coach. When he thinks the players are right, he'll stick up for them."

Garnett's ability on the court is obvious. He sat out the first two exhibition games with a sore right knee. In his second game back Monday, he had 16 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes against the Chicago Bulls. He spurred his team to a 97-89 victory, Minnesota's first in four tries.

Off the court, he does things that can go unnoticed.

Earlier this month, Garnett bought a private screening of the sports-gambling drama "Two for the Money" at a movie theater across from Target Center. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but with Garnett issuing the invitation, it was implied.

"He stressed that was very important," Szczerbiak said. "Everyone showed up."

Szczerbiak said he thinks Garnett has been more vocal this season, the seventh he has played with Garnett. Szczerbiak credits the coaching staff for talking with players and fostering an environment of communication.

"I told him the other night his leadership abilities reminded me so much of guys I've had in the past," Casey said. "Nate McMillan, Gary Payton, guys who've been great leaders as well as great players."

Rick Alonzo covers the Timberwolves and the NBA. KG played 21 minutes and finished with 16 points (7-12 FG; 2-5 FT), 10 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals. His 40% FT's and 5 turnovers were a little surprising, but neither of those should be problems once he shakes the rust off.

The best example of his affect on the game came early in the 2nd quarter. The Bulls were on a small run and brought the game within 9 points. KG entered the game and immediately grabbed a rebound, threw an outlet pass to AC, streaked down the court, got the ball back in the lane, drew 3 defenders, and kicked it out to a wide open Richie Frahm for '3'. Sure, every player is capable of having a brief sequence like this, but KG does it all the time. He gets so involved and in so active amd just makes it easier on everyone around him (unless you're in a different uniform of course). It's plays like these that further confirm my beliefs that Skip Bayless, who recently called Garnett the most overhyped and overpayed player in the game, has never watched basketball. He even went as far as to say KG has never made his teammates better. Hey Skip, there's a reason that Wally Szczerbiak, Troy Hudson, Trenton Hassell and Rasho Nesterovic all have fat contracts... I'll let you guess what that reason is.

Fake-Thug

I'm sure everyone is aware of the scuffle that went on between Othella Harrington and Kevin Garnett. Harrington was driving to the basket when Garnett was whistled for a non-shooting foul. Harrington, however, continued his drive with the intent of taking a shot, so KG continued his defense and slapped the ball out of Harrington's hands. Othella (pretty tough name, isn't it?) then threw the ball at KG, who tossed it back at him. Tyson Chandler then decided to intervene and started jawing with KG. Later, KG commented on the matter:

"He was talking a little bit," Garnett said. "Chandler, I know he's a nice soft dude. ... All of a sudden, he's a gangster, he was talking reckless. I didn't understand that part of it. He got quiet real quick."

Good stuff. Bulls radio announcer, Bill Wennington, pointed out that it might not be the best idea to make KG mad. Personally, I'm wodering why Chandler felt like he needed to feel tough all of a sudden. Defending your teammate is one thing, but it was pretty obvious that Harrington and KG weren't going to come to blows, so Chandler was doing nothing but feeding the fire. Who knows? Maybe all the expectations that were put on him, coming straight out of high school, to become a Kevin Garnett type player have affected his psyche. He's decent, but he's no KG, and he knows it.

KG driving on Tyson "Fake-Thug" Chandler (note KG's new shoes).

Healthy Future on the Horizon

Marko Jaric worked out with an assistant coach prior to Monday's game and will be testing out the ankle in practice today. The Timberwolves lost, but the beginning of this game showed how much of an impact KG has on his team. The starting five for the Wolves was Anthony Carter (3rd string PG), Richie Fram (likely 10-12th man), Trenton Hassell, KG, and Mark Madsen (2nd or 3rd string center). The starting five for the Pistons was their regular lineup, thee of back-to-back championship appearances. When KG came out of the game with 4 minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Timberwolves were up 16-8. This is obviously just a small, small glimpse of what the Wolves could be like this year. But I'll take a glimpse. The Timberwolves might be playing this preseason with a roster that is further than any other team from their expected lineup. It would explain the 0-3 preseason record, however, they have competed in all 3 of those games. I've been saying all along that I thought this team would be better than everyone expected. I mean, KG led guys like Kendall Gill and Anthony Peeler to 50 win seasons, why can't he do it with Marko Jaric, Wally World, Rashad, and Trenton? If anything, the three postseason losses have just reaffirmed my beliefs that the Wolves will compete, and will make the playoffs. Let's hope so at least... because I just dropped $282 for seats in the Staples Center, 8 rows behind the Timberwolves bench for their November 5th game at the Clippers. I'm thinking about wearing a different jersey for every 8 minutes of game time... if you do the math, that's 6 jerseys. Yes, I have 6 Kevin Garnett jerseys. He's just that cool.

Kevin Garnett and Flip Saunders, on opposite sides of the game for the first time.

By the way, T-wolves take on the Bulls tonight. Sure, he knew he was gone when Mac was on the bench. He knew further when we read about the "defense, defense, and defense" being preached in training camp. But don't you think it'll really hit you tomorrow? When you look up and there's KG... in his Timberwolves blues or blacks for the first time in the 2005-2006 NBA season. And who else is there, but in slacks and a sportcoat? Flip Saunders. But he isn't the coach, mentor, or friend of Garnett at this time. For now, he sits at the other side or the scorers table... in the home lights of the scoreboard... at the side of Rasheed, Big Ben, and another familiar face, Chauncey Billups.

It's unlikely that we'll be seeing this scene during tomorrow's game.

We've all known and come to terms with Flip's firing by now. But I don't think the reality of it will completely set in until he see him coaching the opponent tomorrow. I know it's only preseason, but isn't it strange? KG sits the first two pre-games for some extra rest before the regular season, then suits up to display his new 253 lb. frame for the first time against the man that developed and molded him for the first ten years of his already brilliant career. What's it going to be like for KG to dunk on Ben Wallace, then turn and give that glare to the opposing bench--only to see Flip there looking back. What's it going to be like for Flip to have to worry about STOPPING this guy instead of how to utilize his one-of-a-kind talents.

I know it's only preseason, but it seems that there will be a lot of weight attached to this game. You know Flip is going to want to win badly, wanting to show the Wolves management that they made a mistake when they let him go. You also know that KG is going to want to win just as badly. This is a guy that is pissed if he looses a summer scrimmage against some hacks in California... much less an NBA preseason game. And let's not forget Dwayne Casey, looking to prove that he deserves this head coaching job, and probably deserved one years ago. While he may be saying he's not worried about the preseason, do you really think he would just shrug off a 3rd straight loss to open the year? We'll soon find out. It's the first week of preseason and I haven't been this excited about a basketball game since well before last year ended. Tomorrow is when you begin your redemtion KG. Odd though isn't it? Odd that 22.2-13.5-5.7 requires redemtion. Well you better believe that KG will be playing with that mindset, starting tomorrow... and I'm perfectly willing to watch and cheer as he redeems himself.

Garnett Sits Again

Kevin Garnett was held out of the starting lineup for the Timberwolves second preseason game. So is there any confusion as to how he views Kevin Garnett as the league's best player? Not really. KG is the pinnacle of statistical supremacy. He does more to positively affect the stat sheet than any player in the NBA. And the best part? He does it to help his team, not to help himself. Can you imagine Kevin Garnett ever purposely missing a shot so he can grab a 10th rebound, and complete a triple-double a la Ricky Davis and Bobby Sura? Hell no. He's got more pride than that. All you Wolves fans can atest to this. How many times has he finished a third quarter with a line similar to 20 points, 12 boards, and 9 assists... leaving us hoping and wishing for just one more assist. So how does the 4th quarter play out? He starts of taking his 4 minute rest on the bench... the Timberwolves lead slips or deficit increases... he comes back in, pass to Spree - *brick*, pass to Hudson - *brick*... the lead now in serious jeopardy, he scores a few buckets to secure the game.... comes out with a minute or two left. Final line: 26 points, 15 boards, 9 assists. Is he mad that he didn't get the 10th assists? If the Wolves won, he could care less. He plays for the team, not for himself... he just happens to be better at piling up team helping statistics than any other player.

source: www.espn.com

I'm expecting even more ridiculous statistics for KG this year. If his knee has indeed strengthened and he can elevate all year, I can see big things. Last year he was hanging right around 15 boards until his knee started really affecting his game. I think Dwayne Casey is going to look for KG to score more, which means possibly fewer assists. I don't think a 25-15-5 season is out of the question. I also expect him to bring those block numbers back up to around 2 per game to go along with the routine 1.5 steals per game. Casey has said he's going to limit Garnett's minutes, but it shouldn't be a significant decrease from last year.

Here is a link to Hollinger's article:
<br x-rayed and no further damage was found. He is day-to-day and this should have no detrimental effects on his season.

Garnett Returns to Practice

I don't think any Wolves fans expected different, but KG was back in practice Thursday. Everyone knows that if his knee was really bothering him, Casey would keep him out of practice too. I expect a healthy KG (probably like 90-95%) by the season opener. Now, I'm gonna going to act ignorant and say I think he'll be healthy all season. His knees are worn down and they aren't going to get better as the season goes on. Let's just hope that some extra rest and the running he did in Malibu allows him to manage the pain better than last year.

Timberwolves Open Preseason with Loss to Bucks

Well the season is finally here!... sort of. The Timberwolves just finished their first 'official' game of the 2005-2006 season with a 92-89 loss the to visiting Milawakee Bucks. Kevin Garnett did not play because of soreness in his right knee. This game showed both positive and negative signs for the upcoming year, but whether or not they mean much is to be determined.

Positives

Rashad McCants. The rookie led the team in scoring with 18 points, on an efficient 7-12 shooting (2-4 from three and 2-3 from the line). We all knew that he could score, yet it's still nice to see a shooting guard that can shoot and slash. He only had 2 assists, falling far short of his 10 per game goal, but the absence of KG certainl affecting the teams assist totals.

Michael Olowokandi. Again... Michael Olowokandi. Does he really want a fat new contract, or is he simply playing hard?-something every NBA player should do at all times on he court anyways. We'll probably never know, but frankly, if he produces AT ALL, we shouldn't really give a shit. The Kandi Man finished with 10 points, 6 boards, and 2 blocks, but best of all... ONLY 1 FOUL AND 2 TURNOVERS. If Kandi can log some decent minutes, fill the lane, grab some boards, and stay away from cheap fouls... he will do just fine.

3 point shooting. The Wolves shot 7-18 (38.9%). Last year they were terrible from behind the arc, despite having the Mayor back there making almost half his attempts. If this team can make more 3's and spread the D, it should open up the lane a little bit for KG... and he is a man that can make a little go a long ways.

Wally S. World. Mr. Szczerbiak didn't play much later in the game (sprained ankle, hopefully mild), but he made the most of his time. He had 11 points on 4-5 shooting and was a perfect 1-1 from three and 2-2 on the line. If Wally can return to his former all-star form (which woukd not get him an all-star spot this year) it would do wonders for this team. Good job tonight, World.

Defense in Quarters 1-3. They forced Milawakee into more turnovers than assists early on, and seemed to be limiting the guard penetration. These are definitely good signs.

Trenton Hassell. We're all expecting more of an offensive role for Trenton this year, and he kicked his season off with 10 points and 4 assists. Not bad.

Lionel Chalmers. I just feel bad for this guy. He had a spot in LA and did his job. After getting traded to the Wolves, signs point to his release before the regular season. If this indeed happens, I hope he finds a team somewhere this season. Oh, and he was 1-1 for 2 points and 1 assist in his limited action tonight.

T-Hud. Only 3-9 shooting... but 8 assists and 2 turnover... Wolves fans should be very content if he plays like that during the regular season.

Negatives

Defense in the 4th Quarter. I didn't watch the game, only listened, but it sounded like the rotation and perimeter/interior defense all broke down. I don't know if the Wolves were tired, or if it had more to do with the personnel that was on the floor at the end of the game, but the Bucks were getting dunks, layups, and put backs at will. This was a HUGE problem last year and seemed to be much improved early in this game. Don't forget, however, that teams will have a much more to think about while driving the lane when KG (and even Kandi) are waiting for them.

KG's knee. I don't care if keeping him out was rpecautionary... I don't want to hear ANYTHING about his sore knees this year. I want him healthy, I want him high flying, dunking on, in, through, around, over, and under defenders. Any sign of that sore right knee is bad. Let's knock on wood for a strong right knee that so much is depending on.

McCants on D. Again, I didn't watch the game, but I'm assuming McCants was either late on defensive rotations or was getting beat of the dribble because he had 5 personal fouls in only 23 minutes. Hopefully this improves, because judging by his offense tonight, we're gonna need him on the floor for upwards of 30 mpg, if not more.

Nichalkdjas Tskilvitsicfisifeiadf. Only 3 points, 3 boards, and 1 assist... but 6 turnovers and 3 fouls. I don't think he'll play much this season... but he still had a bad night.

Overall, this game was good for the Wolves. They held a lead for the majority of the game without Kevin Garnett. The absence of KG leaves big holes in the offense and defense, but they weren't too evident until the 4th quarter. Let's hope Marko Jaric and KG both suit up for Friday's game against the Pacers. We might get a better look into the real 2005-2006 Minnesota Timberwolves.

Amare Stoudemire out Four Months

Translation: If you have the 3rd pick in an upcoming fantasy draft... TAKE SHAWN MARION. If not for LeBron's rapid progression and my belief that KG is about to have a season that makes his 24.2-13.9-5.0 MVP season look just average... I'd say even think about taking Marion as high as first (afterall...he was rated #1 in Yahoo! leagues last year).

Marion has always been a great fantasy player, but with Amare's injury he could become a legitimate monster.

As far as the Suns are concerned.... this is not good. There season is not over by any means... but you can kiss a Steve Nash MVP repeat good-bye, as well as the top seed in the West. I expect them to hang just below the Kings-Mavericks level for the first half of the season, and then move just above those teams after Amare's comeback... assuming the surgery doesn't affect his explosiveness. This season just got more interesting.

Grand Opening

Welcome to the Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves blog. Here I hope to provide a general analysis and opinion of not only KG and the T-Wolves, but also the other players and teams in the NBA. With the dawn of a very exciting NBA season approaching, I felt it was appropriate for a new, and hopefully informative site to begin. There are many questions that will soon be answered... how good is LeBron going to be? How goos are the Spurs and Heat going to be? Will Ron Artest snap? And of course, the important questions... Will KG's knees allow him to return to the high flying Amare-before-Amare-was-Amare abilities? Will Marko Jaric and Troy Hudson stay healthy.... and produce? Will there be an Ndudi Ebi sighting? Will Wally return to his 'all-star' form? Will Kandi play with the fire of a contract year? Will Dwayne Casey prove that he deserves to be a head coach? Will Rashad McCants straighten up and fly right? Will Eddie Griffin show that last year was just the tip of his iceberg of potential?

There may be no team with more "ifs?" that the Minnesota Timberwolves, and that alone should make all T-Wolves fans very intrigued for the upcoming year. Personally, I don't need any of that. I watch the Timberwolves for one reason, and one reaon only. To witness a man who plays with more heart, desire, competitiveness, fire, and talent that anyone I've ever seen. Everyone knows KG's right knee was bad last year, whether he'll admit it or not. Everyone also knows that while it limited him from improving on his MVP season, it didn't limit his intensity or ability to be one of the NBA's best.

Kevin Garnett is the reason I watch the Minnesota Timberwolves. Kevin Garnett is the reason I shelled out $160 for NBA League Pass last season. Kevin Garnett is the reason why the answer to many of those previous questions will be 'yes'. And Kevin Garnett is the reason that Timberwolves fans always believe that their team has a fighting chance. Here's to an excting NBA New Year!
